When I was a high school student, I remember there was always one kid who just got it. He had no problem with the vertices, the fractions, and the conditionals. He was a rare math pro. In that case, math still bonded us, but through one-sided trauma. I asked him to tutor when the final exams were up, and my desperation to understand why on earth there is a YXZ in a math textbook, and his lack of patience, ended up bringing us together for life. To this day, when the calculator refuses to cooperate, I can give him a call and get a not-so-friendly explanation.

Math is many things, for example, a metaphor for life itself. No matter how many times we try, and how good we get at linear equations, as they seem easy, we still get the answer wrong constantly. We need to cry a little, call a friend, and try again until those symbols start making a little sense. Also, once you feel like you’ve got it all figured out, no worries, there’s always a new level of difficulty. You thought letters mixed with numbers was challenging enough? Think again, my friends, because that is about the time we got introduced to letters that didn’t even exist in the alphabet.

Dear math, I love you and appreciate you, but please, give me a break and stop adding rules to the rules I already can’t remember. Also, please keep showing up on my Instagram feed in the shape of very simple equations I can actually solve, because it makes me feel brilliant. And for all the mathematicians and brilliant friends out there, here are some appreciation memes.
